18th Birthday Presents for Him

What do you buy an 18 year old young man for his birthday? I don't have a son, so this is a very real question for me, as I truly would not have the first clue, but I do have daughters, and it would be hard enough to buy something for them at 18, so I really would have to put my thinking cap on for a sons 18th. Boys are not particularly sentimental, and unlike girls they are may be not so into the idea of building memories, or necessarily marking an occasion with something special.
I cannot imagine they would not appreciate being given something which they might see as being novel or 'cool', or whatever terminology they use. Obviously, they have come of age, and legally they are allowed to drink, so the most obvious present is probably something around the theme of drink. As parents, if you are buying something for your 18 year old son, then I'm sure even if he is not so bothered, that you will be. If it has to be drink you buy for him and you want it to be special, had you ever thought of a bottle of whisky which you could personalize to him? You could put a message or a memorable photograph (which could be one he won't thank you for, but its worth it to see the look on his face when he opens it in front of his friends) on it, or perhaps even engrave it. The point is to could personalise it for posterity, so even if he drinks the liquid, he can always look back at it and say, mum and dad gave me that for my 18th birthday, and then there may be a whole story to be told around that very event. Even though he may not be sentimental, it may turn out to be really special to him, something he never has to forget, because you have given it to him, and we all know that as boys become mature men, things begin to hold more meaning to them, even though they don't see it they feel it and that is perfectly ok.
